Over the course of this assignment, I noticed a few trends in the media through my analysis. These are that words can truly affect how people see things, that media is a main outlet to influence people's thoughts, and that the media is so powerful that it can completely alter and change the human mind and perception of the world and themselves creating problems that are beyond problematic.
As we have learned in critical thinking, words are extremely powerful. The way they are arranged or the subconscious connotations that we attach to them. One thing can become more or less acceptable simply based on word choices, or how we reach an audience is based on our language. For example, the difference between conservative and liberal media is pretty incredible. The audiences clearly are different, so the language used to reach them must be tailored to the audience. Language has become a tool of manipulation by the media. I think like what George Orowell said, our language has lost its meaning due to this constant manipulation. Another example of this was in my blog about the effect of teenage smoking ads in relation to the amount who actually listen. Perhaps the reason so many do end up smoking is because of the words used. Teenagers respond to the words "don't" or "be careful" differently. Words truly effect everything and maybe an alternative route can be taken to address the audience. An understanding of the power of language I think can be used in a positive way, but it typically is used as a tool of manipulation to pull the audience in which can be negative.
I think next the most important and detrimental trend is of how influential the media can be. The media has convinced girls that they are not good enough. That they are lesser of human beings and should be seen as objects by themselves and the people around them. The media has taken away role models for young girls and has replaced them with photoshopped goddesses. What about men? They are told they must be masculine and strong or "manly" in order to have some type of worth. What kind of world is the media shaping? One that looks down upon differences and individuality. One that is shoving conformity down your throat. One that is telling you that you are not good enough. One that is telling you that you literally suck. I don't want to be in a world like that. I don't think anyone does. And now I can see the truth. The media is a sick manipulator who is trying to force us into their own little world. I won't fall for it anymore. Or at least I'll try. But what about all those people who have no awareness? What about all the boys and girls who feed into this and start to believe they have no worth? What about those kids who suffer from anxiety and depression because the world is telling them that they are not good enough. The people who see everything as a competition because they need to prove their worth, they are told that they have to. The people who are alone every day and feel like absolute crap because they have nobody to come and tell them that they are good enough. What about those people? The media has made everyone feel worthless. The media simply has no consideration anymore, whatsoever about how this is affecting the greater population. Like look at us now! People are constantly feeling like sh*t and there has been no change.
After looking so much at the media I have just accumulated so much anger. I am not denying that there is good media out there because there is. I know that. We get valuable information and different viewpoints. But reality is that the majority of the media is all just a form of manipulation. Treating you as a consumer, not a human being. They don't care about you. And look what it has done to us. I think it is time that we instigate the change ourselves and stop listening and falling into the trap of the media. So through this I have gained a greater awareness and seen the sad truth of the media and its affects.
